THE body image conversation is a very large subject to delve into especially for those who are first hearing the term. For some it is painful to speak about and others are totally perplexed as to what all the fuss is about. The subject is trending and evolving constantly throughout the social space and here at LB we applaud this conversation as it is a subject that we feel very strongly about.
Being in the fashion industry, creating everyday garments for women from size 8 to 24, we are in the forefront of these conversations.
We hear of personal stories from our team, models, everyday women, customers our friends and business associates - all who have their own valid and very real stories of body perception and how this effects their lives every single day. We also see the industry norm and the culture that many brands have developed with body and stereotypical types for their own representations however in saying this – this all starts way before brands enter the picture.
From the moment we are old enough to understand the concept of self, body perception is paramount to our development, from childhood, through to our 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and so on.
Our identities have been shaped on our bodies whether we like it or not, with additional layers based on personal experiences and this has shaped the way we feel about ourselves, our self esteem - and too often, judge others.
This perception comes via our peers, our parents, teachers, media, tv, friends and family. From the way our mums may have perceived - and further spoke about their own bodies – through to glossy magazine covers with the perfect faced teens or Dads speaking about women’s particular features – these messages speak volumes and shapes our own ideals and values as to what is acceptable – what we should all look like to be more valued or better than how we are.
This has increased majorly with marketing and advertising in the online environment that furthermore imposes their own messages on us and our children every single day.
THE 101 OF THE BODY MOVEMENT BODY POSITIVITY VS BODY NEUTRALITY - WHAT DOES THIS MEAN
Is the belief that all human beings should have a positive body image, while challenging the ways in which society presents and views the physical body.
The movement advocates the acceptance of all bodies no matter the form, size, or appearance and the goal is to address and change the unrealistic beauty standards and to build the confidence of oneself and others.
The goal of body – neutrality is to dial down the enormous significance that’s being given to physical attractiveness in our society. It goes beyond body positivity in that it’s not just about pushing back on the specific beauty ideals of our time, but on all aspects of society that continue to promote beauty as essential, consequential and the ultimate accomplishment, and a person’s appearance as indicative of their worth from the @beyondbeautifulbook
The views above are simplistic forms of a bigger challenge to so many of us as it is about our Self Image, Idea Self and Self Worth, the very psychology that has been based upon a lifetime of conditioning.
Retraining ourselves to embrace exactly who we are to regain our power on an individual level may take a little work for many of us but it is the time to take on the challenge.
These movements are breaking through the main media and causing a storm and to this we say “YES – go you good things” as it is time for a huge change in this arena and you women are killing it.

Harnaam Kaur – otherwise known as The Bearded Dame – is a body positivity warrior, model, activist and positive influencer. Motivational speaker and social activist – this woman’s a true warrior and is unapologetically fabulous in her key messages to uplift, support and educate on self acceptance with over 10 million followers.
Developing Polycystic Ovary Syndrome as a teenager, Harnamm was severely bullied at school and suffered mental illness as a result - however has managed to overcome her own struggle to not only embrace differences but now teaches others the importance of doing so.
An incredibly inspirational woman.
